When a sovereign nation is coerced into concessions that weaken its long-term security, reward an aggressor and trade its future for the promise of short-term calm, that is not diplomacy. It is capitulation.
Putin is trying to distract and disrupt us from taking our eye off of the ball on supporting Ukraine. I'm pleased to see the response by Britain, but I believe it needs to go further.
Trump’s announcement that he was redeploying two nuclear submarines is obviously designed to avoid, not incite, all-out war with Moscow. But it isn’t statecraft. It’s schoolyard brinkmanship with apocalyptic stakes.
Putin's aggression is spilling into Ukraine. NATO's dated defence posture needs upgrading. Let's agree what 'victory' looks like in Ukraine, and compete the mission. These are my reflections from the 2025 Warsaw Security Conference.

Ukraine’s created a rare turning point in this conflict - only with increased Western support can it be exploited
Ukraine's bold incursion into Russia's Kursk region boosts morale and tests Putin's regime. Tobias Ellwood argues the West's hesitancy in fully supporting Ukraine limits their potential, urging a more assertive stance against Russia despite nuclear fears.
Look up - the nuclear arms race is back. As arms control treaties expire, China and Russia are stockpiling low yield tactical nuclear weapons, making the world more dangerous than during the Cold War. The West lacks a coherent strategy to address this evolving threat.
It’s time to wake up before it's too late, and for Britain to lead the way in defending Western values
We MUST thwart China and Russia's mission to splinter our world into two
We seem to have lost the ability take calculated but resolute risks – and until that changes, Putin will take advantage
Re-arm, get real with the axis of autocracy… and kick the Russian ambassador out
NATO must move troops in now - or face a cold war where Russia and China are potent allies
